Region of Lombardy

Lombardy is one of the most oenologically dynamic regions of Northern Italy. Lombardy is the most well to do region of Italy. Its capital,Milan,is the center of the world's fashion industry. Milan is also the home to its renowned State University of Agriculture, whose influence is felt in every aspect of Italian viticulture. The university being just around the corner has helped Lombardy be a leader in quality wine production.

Lombardians make some excellent wines. Its Alpine climate is tempered by lakes Garda,Iseo, amd lake Como. Major wine growing arears are Oltrepo Pavaese and Valtellina. Grapes grown include;Pinot Nero(Noir)Barbera, and Bonarda.

Much of Lombardy's wine is sold in Milan and the region. The personal visits of our Daniel Ross secured one of Lombardy's finest wineries,Torti.

If you like Pinot Noir then you must try a Pinot Nero from Lombardy. Pinot Noir and Pinot Nero are the same grape. If you purchased the same quality from France it would cost you two to three times as much!

Winery: Dino Torti

Southwest of Milan about seventy-five miles and bordering the region of Piedmont, the Dino Torti farm is located in the region of Lombardy, in an area called Oltrepo Pavese.

Traveling from Milan the terrain is flat until you cross the Po River and pass the ancient town of Pavia where the ground rises up into hills.

There you have reached Oltrepo Pavese, a hilly terrain of limestone, loam, and clay, refreshed by maritime breezes from Liguria and caressed by fog from the Po Valley.

The Torti vineyards were started in 1910 by Giovanni Torti. His son Enrico continued his work, and now his grandson Dino, the current owner, has perfected it.

The business is run by Dino Torti, his wife Giusy, and their daughters Patrizia and Laura. The winemaker is Roberto Gerbino.

The Torti family's winery is a first class operation and they strive to make only the finest of wines. We strongly believe that the Torti name will be known as one of the best wineries in Italy very soon.

Dino Torti's signature wine is the Pinot Nero he ages in oak. Pinot Nero is Italian for Pinot Noir. They also make a Barbera, two sparkling wines from Pinot Nero grape, a Bonarda, a Chardonnay, and a white still wine from the Pinot Nero.
